Ernest Borgnine

Actor

Born - 24 January 1917, Hamden, Connecticut, USA
Died - 8 July 2012

One of Hollywood's longest-lived and most popular actors, a heavy-set, dark-haired player with 'ugly-mug' looks and dangerous smile, Borgnine (born Ermes Borgnino of Italian parentage) came late to films, but made up for it by making close to 200 of them, working right up to his death from renal failure at 95. He began in character, mostly villainous roles: China Corsair (1951), as Fatso in From Here to Eternity (1953), Johnny Guitar (1954) and Bad Day at Black Rock (1954). His image was softened when he won an Oscar for Marty (1955), and he remained in a better variety of semi-leading roles for the rest of his career: Wedding Breakfast (1956), Three Brave Men (1957), The Vikings (1958), Pay or Die! (1959), Summer of the Seventeenth Doll (1961), McHale's Navy (1964), The Flight of the Phoenix (1965), The Dirty Dozen (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Willard (1971), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Law and Disorder (1974), Hustle (1976), Convoy (1978), Escape from New York (1981) and many more. He remained busy in his final years: Hoover (2000), Whiplash (2002), Blueberry (2004), Frozen Stupid (2008), The Genesis Code (2010), The Lion of Judah (2011) and The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez (2012), his last. Wed five times, twice to actresses - Ethel Merman ('The biggest mistake I ever made') and Katy Jurado - he was married to his last wife for almost 40 years.
