Michael Tolan

Actor

Born - 27 November 1925, Detroit, Michigan, USA
Died - 31 January 2011

Leathery, long-headed, but handsome and incisive actor whose best role came when third-billed to Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow in the excellent John and Mary (1969). It perhaps came too late to further his film career when he had already become well-established in television. Born Seymour Tuchow, his somewhat equivocal looks got him cast (billed at first as Lawrence Tolan) mostly as villains in early roles for Warner Brothers: Murder Inc/The Enforcer (1950), Fort Worth (1951) and Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison (1951). Freelancing, he made The People Against O'Hara (1951), Julius Caesar (1953), Second Chance (1953) and two roles as native Americans, The Savage and Hiawatha (both 1952). TV then took over his career until the 1960s, after which he made a few more movies: The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965, as Lazarus), Hour of the Gun (1967), The Lost Man (1969), The 300-Year Week-End (1971), All That Jazz (1979), Talk to Me (1984), Presumed Innocent (1989) and Perfect Stranger (2007), his last. Twice married and divorced, once to actress Rosemary Forsyth, he eventually settled down with a non-professional. He died from renal cancer.
