Nagisa Oshima

Director

Born - 31 March 1932, Okayama, Japan
Died - 15 January 2013

Bespectacled, always immaculately dressed Japanese director whose sexually-explicit movies Empire of the Senses (1976) and Empire of Passion (1978, and a best director award at the Cannes festival) catapulted him to international notoriety. He had begun young, albeit on a quieter note, making his first film, Ai to Kobo no Machi/A Town of Love and Hope when only 27. But it was another nine years before he attracted attention from the western world, first with Death by Hanging (1968), then Diary of a Shinjuku Thief (1969). After the Empire films, he moved to English-language product with Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (1982) and the strange Max Mon Amour (1986). His last film was a samurai action drama, Gohatto (1999). He died from pneumonia.
