Stella Stevens

Actress

Born - 1 October 1938, Yazoo City, Mississippi, USA
Died - 17 February 2023

Another of Hollywood's gutsy blondes, recovering from marrying at 15, having a child and divorcing at 17, to launch an acting career. With rosebud lips, turned up nose and a figure that would have looked good in a sack, Stevens, born Estelle Eggleston, found herself mostly used in films as lightweight decoration, but she also had a feisty personality, spirit and too rarely-tapped acting ability, only Too Late Blues (1961) and The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) bringing out anything like the best from her. After small roles in Say One for Me and The Blue Angel (both 1959), she ascended to leading roles as Appassionata von Climax in Li'l Abner (1959), subsequently appearing in Man-Trap (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), The Nutty Professor (1963), The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963), (1965), The Silencers (1966), How to Save a Marriage...and Ruin Your Life (1967), The Mad Room (1968), A Town Called Bastard (1971), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Arnold (1973), Las Vegas Lady (1975), Nickelodeon (1976) and The Manitou (1977). Numerous TV movies followed, as well as the films Mister Deathman (1981), Wacko (1982), Chained Heat (1983), The Long Shot (1985), Monster in the Closet (1986), Down the Drain (1989), Last Call (1990), The Terror Within II (1991), South Beach (1992), Eye of the Stranger (1993), Attack of the 5' 2'' Woman (1994), Star Hunter (1995), Bikini Hotel (1997), the Long Ride Home (2003), Hell to Pay (2005), Megaconda (2010) and Quackers (2023), her last. Mother of actor/director Andrew Stevens. Rock guitarist Bob Kulick was her long-term partner until his death in 2020. She died from Alzheimer's Disease.
