Lovely, svelte, quite tall brunette English leading lady of cool, calculating gaze, often in icy or predatory roles, and a frequent visitor to the horror genre. After a low-key film debut in a movie made by the studio (Hammer) and director (Terence Fisher) for whom she would later return as a star, she chalked up a number of films in Italy, before starting a busy career back in the UK: Mantrap (1953), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), La Crime di Spora (1955), The Little Hut (1956), Cat Girl (1957), The End of the Line (1957), The Camp on Blood Island (1958), Blood of the Vampire (1958), Murder at Site 3 (1959), Village of the Damned (1960), The Shadow of the Cat (1961), Death Trap (1962), Stranglehold (1962), Blind Corner (1963), The Gorgon (1964), The Secret of Blood Island (1964), Dracula - Prince of Darkness (1965), Rasputin The Mad Monk (1965), Quatermass and the Pit (1967), Ghost Story/Madhouse Mansion (1974) and More Than a Messiah (1991), her last. Born Barbara Kowin, she died from coronavirus complications.
