Pale-faced, black-haired, narrow-eyed American actor and comedian, who took his childlike character Pee-wee Herman with some success into several films. Born Paul Rubenfeld, he survived something of a sex scandal in the early 1990s to continue his career. Films included The Brotherhood (1968), Things We Did Last Summer (1978), Midnight Madness (1980), The Blues Brothers (1980), Nice Dreams (1981), Pandemonium (1982), Meatballs Part II (1984), Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Flight of the Navigator (1986), Back to the Beach (1987), Moonwalker (1988), Batman Returns (1992), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), the voice of Lock in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Dunston Checks In (1995), Matilda (1996), Buddy (1997), the voice of Raccoon in Doctor Dolittle (1998), Mystery Men (1999), Blow (2001), Teacher's Pet (2004), The Tripper (2006), Room 911! Miami (2007), Life During Wartime (2009), Pee-wee Goes to Sturgis (2010), the voice of Screwy Squirrel in Tom and Jerry's Giant Adventure (2013), Pee-wee's Big Holiday (2016) and the short The Crown With a Shadow (2021), his last. Lived for a number of years with actress Debi Mazar, though they never married. He died from hypoxic respiratory failure after a six-year battle with cancer.
