(Sir) Sean Connery

Actor

Born - 25 August 1930, Edinburgh, Scotland
Died - 31 October 2020

Tall, dark, abrasive, Scottish-born star, born Thomas Sean Connery, whose bland youthful handsomeness became more interesting when he passed 30. The first (and still youngest) James Bond, he quickly made the role his own, consequently ignoring receding hair to continue in a variety of rugged leading roles, conveying different nationalities with utter conviction despite a defiant Scots burr - and winning an Oscar for his performance in The Untouchables in 1987. Knighted in 2000, he was married (first of two) to actress Diane Cilento for 10 years. The long haul to stardom began with a fleeting appearance in Lilacs in the Spring (1954), an impressive array of subsequent credits including No Road Back (1956), Hell Drivers (1957), Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1958, his first lead), Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959), The Frightened City (1961), The Longest Day (1962), Dr No (1962), From Russia With Love (1963), Woman of Straw (1964), Marnie (1964), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), The Hill (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Shalako (1968), The Molly Maguires (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Anderson Tapes (1971), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Robin and Marian (1976), The First Great Train Robbery (1978), Time Bandits (1981), Never Say Never Again (1983), Highlander (1985), The Name of the Rose (1986), The Presidio (1988), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Medicine Man (1991), Rising Sun (1993), Just Cause (1995), The Rock (1996), Entrapment (1999) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), his last. He died in his sleep after a lengthy illness.
