Chunky, round-faced, moustachioed Indian actor in UK and later Bollywood films, often seen as genial rogues, although the TV series Gangsters in 1975 made his name in Britain and brought out his darker side. After starting his own theatre company in India, he came to the UK and soon settled in to a variety of film roles: Parable (1964), The Guru (1969), The Horsemen (1970), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Chess Players (1977), The Last Giraffe (1979), Sphinx (1981), Gandhi (1982), A Passage to India (1984), My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), The Deceivers (1988), After Midnight (1990), 15th August (1993), Gambler (1995), Lulu (1996), The Journey (1997), Guru in Seven (1998), Second Generation (2000), Mr In-Between (2001), Cross My Heart (2003), Chicken Tikka Masala (2005), The Battle for Bunker Hill (2008) and Everywhere and Nowhere (2011), his last, plus many Bollywood films on return visits to India. Jaffrey, who died from a brain haemorrhage, married twice: actress/cookery writer Madhur Jaffrey and, latterly, casting director Jennifer Jaffrey. The actress Sakina Jaffrey is his daughter.
