(Sir) Roger Moore

Born - 14 October 1927, Stockwell, London, England
Died - 23 May 2017

Suave, sophisticated, brown-haired English actor and international star, youthfully-handsome into his forties. After years of struggle, and an abortive period in Hollywood, his drawlingly upper-class tones hit the big time with such TV series as Ivanhoe, Maverick and, most importantly The Saint. Stardom was consolidated when he was cast in middle age as James Bond, but in truth The Saint was the role that suited him best. He had begun in films as a teenager: Perfect Strangers (1945), Gaiety George (1946), Captain Boycott (1947), Trottie True (1949), Honeymoon Deferred (1950) and One Wild Oat (1951). In Hollywood, he made The Last Time I Saw Paris (1954), Interrupted Melody (1955), Diane (1956), The King's Thief (1956), The Miracle (1959), The Sins of Rachel Cade (1960) and Gold of the Seven Saints (1961). After the 'Saint' series ended, he returned to the cinema: Crossplot (1969), The Man Who Haunted Himself (1970), Live and Let Die (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Gold (1974), Shout at the Devil (1976), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), The Wild Geese (1978), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985), Bullseye! (1990), The Quest (1996), The Enemy (2000), Boat Trip (2002), Incompatibles (2013) and The Carer (2016), his last. Four times married, he died at his Swiss home from cancer. He had been knighted in 2003.
