Geraldine McEwan

Actress

Born - 9 May 1932, Old Windsor, Berkshire
Died - 31 January 2015

Impishly attractive, elfin blonde English actress with distinctive husky voice, often in coquettish or scheming roles and in early old age an idiosyncratic Miss Marple in several feature-length made-for-television adaptations of Agatha Christie mysteries. A distinguished Shakespearian on stage, her distinctive tones also excelled in a mid-1980s TV series of the Mapp and Lucia stories of E F Benson. Born Geraldine McKeown, she was on stage at 14 and in London's West End at 18. Films never brought her the same acclaim, although she was in quite a few down the years: There Was a Young Lady (1952), Beware of Children (1961), The Dance of Death (1969), The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones (1976), Foreign Body (1986), Henry V (1989), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), The Love Letter (1999), Love's Labour's Lost (2000), The Magdalene Sisters (2002), Vanity Fair (2004) and The Lazarus Child (2005), her last, before Marple claimed her final years. She died following a stroke: her husband of almost 50 years died in 2002.
