Frank Cady

Actor

Born - 8 September 1915, Susanville, California, USA
Died - 8 June 2012

Bald, thin-faced, moustachioed, ever-smiling, faintly oriental-looking character actor who played homely, home-town types along with the occasional minor felon. After a film debut in Mr Deeds Goes to Town (1936), his cinema career was interrupted by London theatre training, followed by war service. On his return to Hollywood, he came quickly into demand for minor roles calling for beady-eyed knowhow, often in films noirs as bartenders, editors or shopkeepers: Violence (1947), He Walked by Night (1948), City Across the River (1949), Flamingo Road (1949), Abandoned (1949), D.O.A. (1949), The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Convicted (1950), The Violent Hour (1950), Dear Brat (1951), Ace in the Hole (1951), The Sellout (1952), The Atomic City (1952), Half a Hero (1953), Rear Window (1954), The Indian Fighter (1955), Trial (1955), The Bad Seed (1956), The Tin Star (1957), The Missouri Traveller (1958) and The Man Who Understood Women (1959) - then into TV, where he played the same character, Sam Drucker, who ran a general store, in more than 300 episodes of three different series: Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres between 1963 and 1971. There were a few more movies - The Gnome-Mobile (1967), Million Dollar Duck (1971) and Hollywood Cowboy (1975). His last feature work was reprising his old role of Sam Drucker in the 1990 TV movie Return to Green Acres.
