Solidly-built, ruddy-cheeked, dark-haired, affable English actor who married at 39 and became a star in middle-age, receiving two Oscar nominations in the process. At his best in sweaty, pressurised roles, he is still best remembered as one of the Sheffield strippers in The Full Monty (1997); his impressive film CV also includes The Shadow Line (1976), Bones (1984), Wetherby (1985), Paper Mask (1990), In the Name of the Father (1993), Priest (1994), Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997), Wilde (1997), Rush Hour (1998), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Ride with the Devil (1999), The Patriot (2000), In the Bedroom (2001), The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), Stage Beauty (2004), Batman Begins (2005), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Michael Clayton (2007), Rocknrolla (2008), 44 Inch Chest (2009), The Ghost Writer (2010), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011), Belle (2103), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Snowden (2016), Dead in a Week or Your Money Back (2018) and SAS: Red Notice (2021), his last. He died suddenly at home, survived by his wife, actress Diana Hardcastle, and two daughters.
