Tommy Kirk

Actor

Born - 10 December 1941, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Died - 28 September 2021

Dark-haired, slim, fresh-faced, (very) boyish American teenage actor and young adult star. In show business as a boy, he made a stage debut at 13. Following two 1956 films - Down Liberty Road and The Peacemaker - and success in The Hardy Boys on TV, he was swiftly drawn into the arms of the Disney Studio. After drawing tears as the owner of Old Yeller (1957), he was in Look Out for John Tucker (1958), The Shaggy Dog (1959), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), The Absent Minded Professor (1961), Escapade in Florence (1962), Son of Flubber (1963), Savage Sam (1963), The Misadventures of Merlin Jones (1964) and The Monkey's Uncle (1965). But his contract was not renewed after he came out as gay in 1965. The studio that had taken him in spat him out again. After minor action films, comedies and low-budget horrors, he was little heard from until the 1980s: Village of the Giants (1965), The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966), Track of Thunder (1967), Blood of Ghastly Horror (1967), Mars Needs Women (1968), It's Alive! (1969) and Ride the Hot Wind (1971). Later films were a strange assortment: Streets of Death (1988), Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfolds (1995), Little Miss Magic (1997), Billy Frankenstein (1998), Club Dead (2000) and Education of a Vampire (2001), his last. He was found dead while living alone in Las Vegas.
