Jean-Paul Belmondo

Actor

Born - 9 April 1933, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France
Died - 6 September 2021

The supremely Gallic leading man of the 1960s, the inimitably French Belmondo's lazy charm won him an instant international following after his first big success in Godard's Breathless. Thereafter, he tended to trade on his image, but remained a high-profile star. Like Tom Cruise and Burt Reynolds, he liked to do his own stunts - until 1985, when injury and insurers prevented further film escapades. But he kept busy until 2001 when a stroke sidelined him for years, though he made one further film in 2008. Close to 100 movie roles included those in Dimanche Nous Volerons (1956), A Pied, a Cheval and en Voiture (1957), Sois Belle et Tais-toi/Blonde for Danger (1958), Breathless/A Bout de Souffle (1959), A Double Tour/Web of Passion (1959), Love and the Frenchwoman (1960), Two Women (1961), Cartouche/Swords of Blood (1962), That Man from Rio (1964), Weekend at Dunkirk (1964), Pierrot le Fou (1965), Is Paris Burning? (1966), Casino Royale (1967), Mississippi Mermaid (1969), Borsalino (1970), Docteur Popaul/Scoundrel in White (1972), Stavisky (1974), L'Animal (1977), Flic ou Voyou (1979), Le Professionel (1981), Joyeuses Paques/Happy Easter (1984), Le Solitaire (1986), Journey of a Spoiled Child (1988), Stranger in the House (1992), The One Hundred and One Nights (1994), Les Miserables (1995), Half a Chance (1997), Peut-etre (1999), Amazon (2000) and A Man and His Dog (2008), his last. Twice married and divorced, he also had lengthy relationships with actresses Ursula Andress and Laura Antonelli.
