Jeanne Moreau

Actress

Born - 23 January 1928, Paris, France
Died - 31 July 2017

Forceful, tight-lipped French actress, dark of eye and hair, a Gallic Bette Davis whose performances deservedly made her an international star: a magnetic screen personality and priestess of high drama. Once the youngest student at the French National Conservatory of Dramatic Art, her screen career took a while to catch fire, after a debut in Dernier Amour (1948). A small role in Jean Gabin's crime flick Grisbi/Touchez Pas au Grisbi (1954) pushed her status forward and stardom was confirmed by her eye-catching turn in Lift to the Scaffold (1958). Later vehicles included Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1959), 5 Branded Women (1959), Jules et Jim (1961), Eva/Eve (1962), A Time to Live and a Time to Die/Le Feu Follet (1963), Agent H 21/Mata Hari (1964), The Train (1965), Viva Maria (1965), Chimes at Midnight (1966), The Bride Wore Black (1968), Monte Walsh (1970), Chere Louise (1972), Nathalie Granger (1974), The Last Tycoon (1976), Your Ticket is No Longer Valid (1980), Querelle (1982), Sauve-toi, Lola (1986), Nikita/La Femme Nikita (1990), The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea (1991), Map of the Human Heart (1992), A Foreign Field (1993), Beyond the Clouds (1995), Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998), Lisa (2001), Go West (2005), Plus Tard Tu Comprendras/One Day You'll Understand (2008), Face (2009), A Lady in Paris (2012), Le Talent de Mes Amis (2015), her last, and many more. Shamefully never even nominated for an Oscar, she married (and divorced) three times, the last to American director William Friedkin. She died from natural causes.
