Dark-haired, oval-faced, gentlemanly Canadian actor who gathered a reputation for moodiness before mellowing after his (third) 1970 marriage to English actress Elaine Taylor, who survives him. Forever associated with the role of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965), the Canadian star had established a reputation in the theatre and (from 1953) on TV before entering films with Stage Struck and Wind Across the Everglades (both 1958). Many subsequent movie credits include The Fall of the Roman Empire (1962, as Commodus), Inside Daisy Clover (1965), Triple Cross (1966), Night of the Generals (1966), Oedipus the King (1967), Nobody Runs Forever (1968), Lock Up Your Daughters! (1969), Battle of Britain (1969), Waterloo (1970), The Return of the Pink Panther (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Aces High (1976), The Disappearance (1977), Murder by Decree (1978), Hanover Street (1979), The Janitor (1980), The Amateur (1981), Ordeal by Innocence (1984), The Boss's Wife (1986), Dragnet (1987), Souvenir (1989), Star Trek VI: The Un∂iscovered Country (1991), Malcolm X (1992), Wolf (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), Hidden Agenda (1998), The Insider (1999), Dracula 2000 (2000), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Nicholas Nickleby (2002), Alexander (2004), The Lake House (2006), Caesar and Cleopatra (2009), Beginners (2010), The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011), The Forger (2014), The Exception (2016), All the Money in the World (2017), Knives Out (2019), The Last Full Measure (2019), his last, and many more.
