Mel Stuart

Director-producer

Born - 2 September 1928, New York City, USA
Died - 9 August 2012

A maker of award-winning documentaries, the genial, bespectacled Stuart also spent a decade as a director of generally light-hearted (and successful) movies, most notably the 1971 version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He was nominated for an Oscar for his 1964 documentary Four Days in November, but the feature films (and TV movies) began a few years later: I Love My Wife (1970), Willy Wonka, One is a Lonely Number (1972), Wattstax (1973), Mean Dog Blues (1978) and The White Lions (1981). He also made TV movie biopics, such as Ruby and Oswald (1978) and Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980). After that, he returned to the field of TV documentary. He died from cancer.
